If you haven’t heard of Cabelas, then you may have been born under a rock. With hundreds of stores across the US, they are one of the few brick and mortar stores left you can still purchase hunting supplies. Offering just about every brand imaginable in the fishing, hunting, and outdoors industry Cabelas is a one-stop shop. However, with their great success, they have been able to launch their own line of products branded Cabelas. From fishing poles and coolers to boots and tents, Cabelas creates it all.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that they have an entire Northern Flight line dedicated to dog training and hunting. As a result, Cabelas dog vest for duck hunting is a perfect addition to this list.

Cabelas does recommend if you are in between sizes to get the larger of the two. We did find that the foot or shoulder holes had plenty of room for our dog’s chest and shoulders while running or standing. Benefits of Using a Dog Vest For Duck Hunting –

When it comes to the duck hunting season the weather can start in the high 70’s and eventually by the end of the season reach below freezing conditions. Therefore, as hunters, we have to have the right waders, gloves, and hats to withstand hunting all day in this conditions. However, the only item that you can purchase for your dog to keep them warmer and protected is a dog vest. Most dog owners pay close attention to their dog and their conditions in the environment. However, they don’t fully understand the benefits of a dog vest for duck hunting. So we put together the top reasons for using a dog vest this fall.

Dog Vest For Warmth –

When it comes to the fall weather temperatures it can be very cold by end of October and November. While we hunt we try and stay as dry as possible because water is the number one factor so many hunters get cold on a hunt. However, we expect our dogs to jump into near-freezing water and stay warm. It almost doesn’t make any sense, however, for water dogs they do have added protection with their coat and ability to dry off. Although a lot of gun dog owners opt to use a dog vest for duck hunting to give their dogs some added insulation and warmth. As most dog vests are made of neoprene this adds a layer of insulation between the elements and their coat. Plus neoprene hold in water and the body heat from your dog will warm the water creating some additional heat.

Dog Vest For Protection –

If you have a dog like mine that goes about 100 mph for every retrieve you begin to see how easy it would be for them to hit a stick or log and hurt themselves. I’ve even walked through reeds and tall grass and have had the grass cut my face if it hits you just right. Therefore, it’s easy to see how a dog could puncture their chest or belly jumping into a marsh or jumping over corn stalks.

This brings us to the second reason many dog owners use a dog vest for hunting water or fields. The layer of protection ensures that material found on your hunts won’t hurt your dog’s coat skin. A vest provides that added layer, I’ve heard some bad stories of guys hunting with their dogs and them hitting a stick or branch just right and creating a huge laceration. Ultimately ending a hunt, whereas if you choose to give your dog a vest, it gives one extra layer of protection to lessen the blow or injuries.

Floatation –

One of the last purposes common in the waterfowl hunting industry is added flotation for duck dogs. If you tend to hunt over moving rivers, or rough big waters knowing your dog has added security for swimming can be very comforting. Therefore, numerous hunting dog vests have added flotation in them which is additional to the neoprenes floating aid. Typically a vest isn’t a safety flotation device, however, it does add some additional lift in the water. Giving you a sense of security when your dog encounters rough waters, or fast miving rivers.
