Carlson Choke Tubes Review

Purchasing a waterfowl shotgun can be one of the more exciting purchases you will make when gearing up for Goose or Duck season. Owning a shotgun that will last and shoot properly year after year is extremely important. One way to ensure you have a shotgun that is accurate and that can deliver steel shot on target is a choke tube. Carlson Choke Tubes has been leading the industry with their choke tubes for years and we decided to break down the numerous products they offer and review exactly what they are designed for.

Choke Tubes –

Most modern shotguns today have removable chokes installed at the end of the barrel. However, at one time and not that long ago most guns would have a fixed barrel diameter, with no ability to change the exit diameter of a barrel. For instance, my father still has an old Mossberg .410 shotgun that has a fixed barrel diameter. However, the invention of the choke boring was invented or at least attributed to J.W. Long a gunsmith dating back to 1827. The first known patent wasn’t until 1866, by Sylvester H. Rope, another American gunsmith.

It wasn’t until 1874 when W.W. Greener first tried to imitate the choke formation, running multiple tests and experiments perfecting a pattern. That would later be more effective and more accurate than any other manufacturer. Greener perfected the choke boring better than any other manufacture leading to many disbelieving the accuracy. However, with a public test, the Greener choke bores won numerous awards, making his name famous in choke boring.

Fast forward to modern day shotguns and choke manufactures, a firearm owner can purchase nearly a dozen different sized chokes. Not even including the one’s shotgun manufactures include with your shotgun purchase. Some are even specific to certain hunting, for example, coyotes, turkey’s, and for sake of our article waterfowl. We want to showcase Carlson chokes and review their top of the line choke tubes.

Carlson Choke Tubes – History

2018 marks 30 years in business for Carlson. They have been able to grow and improve their choke tube products. Helping them design and manufacture hundreds of different chokes, some even specific to certain shotgun shell manufactures. Carlson manufactures their chokes from Atwood, Kansas, and has proven over time to create the top of the line chokes. Thanks to Scott Carlson, he has been able to create a company that is built on producing quality products, and always looking for new advancements and improvements to their products.

Carlson Choke Tubes – Technology

Today most Choke Tubes are made of stainless steel that is rust resistant. However, Carlson’s choke tubes are made of the finest corrosion-resistant 17-4 PH stainless steel. This type of stainless steel is widely used in aerospace, chemical, and petrochemical industries. Carlson’s choke tubes are made to stand up to repeated wear and tear of steel shot.

Cremator Series Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

Carlson Choke Tubes

The Carlson Cremator Non-Ported Choke tubes feature Triple Shot Technology or TST. TST is a series of three rings in the taper section of the choke tube. Allowing for a more gradual transition from the beginning of the choke to the end. Think of as being tapered from the beginning of the choke versus the start of the taper beginning halfway down the choke. TST allows the pellets to fly tighter, reducing flight deformation while creating a denser pattern on the target.

The Cremator is featured as an extended choke tube that doesn’t require a wrench and can be quickly removed when cleaning. It also helps protect the tip of the barrel as it sticks out by about an inch. Depending on your preference and shooting ranges, Carlson offers this in three different sizes, and a two pack option when purchasing. The three different sizes are Close, Mid, and Long Range.

Cremator Snow Goose Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

Carlson Choke Tubes offers a snow goose hunting specific choke tube, which is coated in white Cerakote. This provides a leading abrasion, corrosion, and chemical resistant non-glare finish. The Snow Goose cremator offers Triple Shot Technology which can be found in the cremator series choke tubes. The technology allows for a more gradual taper section inside the choke tube. This gives the shooter added benefits that reduce the pellet deformation, and a denser pattern.

The Snow Goose cremator has no speed or size limits making this a great universal choke tube to purchase. Since the choke is an extended choke tube, you receive a 25% longer parallel section for a more dense pattern and a tighter pattern. Similar to the other cremator models, this offers a wrench-less design so you can remove it with your hands. Lastly, the Cremator comes in both ported and a non-ported version. Like all Carlson Choke Tubes, this carries a lifetime warranty and is made of the premium 17-4 stainless steel offered with many of their chokes. Even though this is a snow goose specific choke, it offers a ton of versatility and for a great price.

Extended Super Steel Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

One of the newest chokes to Carlson Choke Tubes is the Extended Super Steel Shot Choke Tubes. The technology is designed to pattern really well with steel shot. Of course, for many years everyone has been trying to make steel shot pattern like lead shot. With this choke tube, Carlson has been able to design it to work with multiple steel shot manufactures creating a tight and dense pattern. The choke features a parallel section allowing for fewer flyers and a denser pattern. This longer parallel section also allows for steel shot in various sizes. Made of the same 17-4 stainless steel in a blue finish this tube is meant to stand up to waterfowl conditions without rusting or corroding.

Extended Super Steel Carson Choke tubes carry a similar lifetime warranty as the Cremator series. The super steel also is extended by 3/4″ with a knurled finish making it easy to remove without a wrench. The one restriction with using the Super Steel Choke is that is designed to be used with steel shot that has a velocity of 1550FPS or less, and no steel shot sizes larger than BB can be shot through the long range choke.

Black Cloud Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

Carlson Choke Tubes has gone above and beyond to match what waterfowl hunters are shooting. Carlson understood that their Cremator series was a good fit for Federal Black Cloud ammunition. However, they knew they could make a choke designed specifically to match the knockdown power of Black Cloud ammunition. So they teamed up with Federal to create the Black Cloud specific choke tube. The tubes are made of Titanium coated steel and are provided in a long and mid-range version. Because the Black Cloud has a specific wad design called the FlightControl Wad the Titanium finish on the choke tubes help the wad perform better on target, providing less build-up in the choke.

Even though the chokes are designed for the Black Cloud ammunition, if you find a great deal on some other steel shot ammunition don’t worry. This choke is designed to perform well with other steel shot as well. The only restriction is that you should use shot less than BB size with the long range choke, and stick to ammunition that is slower than 1550 FPS. As for the mid-range choke tube, that can be used with ammunition that exceeds 1550 FPS, and can be used with all shot sizes. Therefore, in my mind its a better idea to buy the mid-range choke tube. This way you won’t have to worry what does or doesn’t work.

Blindside Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

Carlson Choke TubesSimilar to teaming up with the widely used Black Cloud ammunition, Carlson Choke Tubes teamed up with Winchester to design a choke tube that performed better than anything out there for the Blind Side shotgun ammunition. So similar to the Black Cloud choke tubes, the Blindside Choke Tubes are designed to perform really well with the HEX steel shot and Diamond Cut wad design offered by Winchester. Allowing for an impactful downrange pattern that will definitely take down more ducks and geese.

Even though the choke is again designed for the Blindside ammunition, it can perform exceptionally well with other steel shots, such as Hevi-Shot ammunition. It also has the ability to be used with lead, plated copper, and nickel shot. This gives you a choke tube with great versatility. Similar to the Black Cloud chokes, the mid-range chokes can be used with all steel shot ammunition and velocity. However, the extended Blind side choke tube is recommended for steel shot sizes under BB, and steel shot with a velocity of 1550 FPS or less.

Waterfowl 2-Pack & 3-Pack Choke Tubes – Carlson Choke Tubes

Carlson choke TubesCarlson has created a unique offering for waterfowl hunters that is quite affordable. Carlson realized that at times when waterfowl hunting you may be taking shorter shots, and maybe another day long shots. Therefore, they came out with their 2-pack and 3-pack waterfowl choke tube sets. The tubes are made of 1704 stainless steel similar to the Cremator series. Plus they all offer an extended knurled finish making them easy to remove with your hands.

What makes the 2 and 3 packs so interesting is that they offer a Mid range and Long range option. The 3 pack includes mid, long and close range choke tubes. So the knurled end makes them quite easy to remove and swap when hunting. Now I’m not someone that usually keeps multiple chokes in my blind bag, but I know people that swear by it.

Another nice feature to think of when purchasing a multi-pack is that if you have a hunting buddy needing one as well you can cut costs by sharing the packs. They are also extremely nice if you pattern your gun it gives you the ability to compare the long and mid-range against each other. This allows you to see which one works best with your gun. The one restriction they have on these sets is to use steel shot that is less than BB with a velocity of 1550 FPS or less. Plus similar to all Carlson Choke Tubes, these carry the lifetime warranty. Giving you the peace of mind knowing they are designed to perform for life.
