Rating – 10
Cost –  $$

Features –

The Avian-X AXP decoys have a robust set of features. Therefore, we will start at the top with the head. Each decoy has fully black flocked heads to add realism to your goose decoys. The flocked heads won’t shine or reflect sunlight causing any glare to live geese.  I will say if you’re looking at getting any type of goose decoys to look for flocked heads. When geese come in with numbers they have many eyes to pick apart your spread. Therefore, having every realistic advantage to your spread is essential for goose hunting.

When it comes to the heads themselves they are mounted onto the decoy straight from the factory. Therefore, you don’t have to mess with putting the heads on. Additionally, they are screwed on to the body to ensure they won’t fall off. The last thing you want to do is spend all that money on decoys that fall apart and cause frustration each morning.

Paint & Base –

Once you get to the Avian-X AXP goose decoys body you’ll see an ultra-realistic carving and paint scheme, unlike any other decoy. The decoys are custom painted with unique adhesion paint that helps stick to the decoy and won’t scratch or peel off. The decoys are designed for the “throw-and-go” hunters who require large spreads and don’t have the time to put all of them into bags.

Lastly, is the base of the Avian-X AXP goose decoys, made of solid steel it’s a heavy-duty base to help support the decoy. The shape is a bit unique from other manufacturers as it’s square which offers optimal ground support in heavy winds. The base is also a retractable motion base. As a result, the base can push into the decoy making them easy to carry and store. Plus it still offers plenty of motion when the wind picks up.

Conclusion –

Avian-X is one of the few manufacturers that has stepped outside the norm and created numerous goose body positions. Typically most goose decoy manufactures create only 2-4 positions. Whereas, Avain-X has created numerous feeders, walkers, and sentry goose decoys. Therefore, when you step back from your spread you’ll see the most realistic spread of goose decoys available. The decoys are sold in packs of six total and within the last year, they have dropped the prices on these decoys to be more competitive in the market. If you’re looking to build your decoy spread and want the best goose decoys, start with Avian-X.

The overwhelming amount of contrast in colors for a Canada Goose decoy helps them look like live geese. What also helps add realism and motion is the Wind Walker Motion base. Constructed of steel the circular base allows the full body goose decoys to sit on top of them. To help secure the base to the full body decoy, the decoys have looped elastic straps to prevent them from falling off when you’re moving them around.

Conclusion –

Avian-X AXP Lesser Goose Decoys –

goose decoys

Quantity – 6 Pack
Rating – 9.5
Cost –  $

Features –

The Avian-X Lesser decoys are one of the fastest growing decoys to consume the market. For many years goose hunters wanted bigger and oversized decoys, however, as time went on they realized that they were taking up a lot of room in their trailer or truck. Now many guys are moving back to smaller decoys but more numbers. Which is possible with a lesser decoy as they are normal size and cost less than full body decoys. Avian-X is one of the few manufacturers that have been successfully creating lesser decoys.

First and foremost the reason why the Avian-X Lesser goose decoys are so popular is that they are easy to deploy. Unlike the full body decoys where they have bases attached to them. Avian has a stake system similar to their full body duck decoys and turkey decoys. Therefore, you use fiberglass stakes and the decoy body sits on top the stake creating the easy deployment. Additionally, the stake system allows for the decoys to have plenty of motion when even the slightest of wind is blowing.

Paint & Base –

The paint for the Lesser goose decoys is very similar to full body and shell decoys by Avian-X. You’ll find that the body carving and paint scheme blends into your decoys. No need to worry if you are adding these to another set of decoys not made by Avian-X. These decoys blend into any spread and create plenty of contrast and size difference to help fool birds.

As we talked about already these decoys don’t have a steel square frame for a base. Instead, there’re included fiberglass stakes that the decoys are supported on. The stakes are heavy duty and can easily be pushed into grain fields regardless of the temperature as the tops are pointed. If you’re worried about the base not looking like actual feet. Avian-X built in their flexible legs into their Lesser goose decoys providing plenty of realism.

Conclusion –

Avian-X creates just about every style of goose decoy, and the lesser decoy is one of my favorites. They are easy to carry into just about any location as they are much smaller than the full body decoys. Plus in a cut field side by side with a full body, they are hard to tell the difference in size. If I was leaning towards building out a new decoy goose spread, Lesser decoys would be my first purchase.

Big Foot B2 Goose Decoys –

goose decoys

Quantity – 6 Pack
Rating – 9.3
Cost –  $

As far as goose decoys go, there are few that can say they have been making decoys in the early 1980’s. However, Big Foot Decoys was, they were made available in 1984. At the time there was nothing on the market that could offer the realistic and lifelike detail of the Big Foot Decoys. Since Canada Goose numbers had been so low for so long, few manufactures invested in making goose decoys. However, Art Ladehoff, was determined to make a decoy for himself that could withstand the Mississippi River.

When Big Foot Goose Decoys were first introduced they were actually a little higher than other brands on the market. However, the decoys were everything hunters needed to fool birds, and they quickly became the staple. Even today Big Foot Decoys are one of the best goose decoys dollar for dollar. I would imagine just about every goose hunter has hunted over a Big Foot goose decoy before.

Features –

Today the Big Foot Goose decoys can be found in a few different body positions. However, the most popular are the feeder heads, the decoy is the most realistic decoy when it comes to feeders. The decoys are offered in a three-piece design. Between feet, head, and body, this is what makes up the goose decoys. Many hunters appreciate that the feet can be removed to put in bags more easily. However, they don’t have to be removed if you have the trailer space.

As for the heads, they are fully flocked and don’t require any tools or screws to put on. Instead, they secure with a simple twist. Once assembled these decoys look fantastic in the field and will easily fool Canada geese. As the overall size of the feeder decoy is 34″ x 26″ x 11″. Therefore, you’ll be getting a full oversized decoy that will provide plenty of size to your spread.

Paint & Base –

The paint first and foremost may not have the detail of an Avian-X or Dakota Decoy, but it sure won’t chip or scratch easily. I’ve known guys who toss their decoys in their trailer for years and they still shoot limits over Big Foot Decoys. Overall, the paint is plenty durable enough for the conditions most goose hunters endure each season.

The base is a bit different than any other decoys on the market. Instead of a motion system or metal base. The Big Foot Goose decoys have “big feet”, hence the name. The feet offer support to keep the decoys upright. Plus the large feet offer plenty of visibility for overhead geese.

Conclusion –

I don’t want to consider the Big Foot Decoys as a budget decoy only. They are some of the best and offer a great legacy of goose decoy making. However, they are more affordable and if you are building your first spread or added some numbers, Big Foot Goose decoys are a fantastic option.

DOA Rogue Series Goose Decoys –

best goose decoys

Quantity – 6 Pack
Rating – 9.0
Cost –  $$

DOA Decoys or “Dead On Arrival” has strived to make its name in the overwhelming goose decoy industry. They have quickly excelled as being one of the most realistic looking goose decoys. However, this was only possible for their mission to be the number one choice for waterfowl hunters. They set out to find the best champion carvers to give their decoys life and they didn’t just find one but two. Victor Paroyan and Glenn Ladenberger took the challenge of creating their line of decoys with the start of the goose full body.

Features –

Since the DOA decoys are carved from some of the best carvers in the industry. It’s no surprise that these decoys offer one of the most realistic images of a goose. It’s hard to tell what is a decoy and what is a live goose with these decoys. Between the size and shape, DOA decoys has got the perfect carving. Each of these decoys additionally comes fully flocked, meaning there is nowhere on the decoy to reflect sun glare.

The DOA goose decoys are featured with a full one-piece body that is hassle-free. The box even includes three feeders, two uprights, and one sentry. Offering the perfect mix of body positions and realism.

Paint & Base –

Paint for DOA Decoys is their bread and butter, each decoy is hand painted to offer the most realistic decoy ever made. Instead, of getting a mass produced paint job, DOA Decoys has each decoy hand painted with color so realistic it fools any pressured goose.

Aside from the best paint scheme on the market, DOA decoys offer their very unique Hex shaped base. This allows the decoys to stay standing even with an unlevel ground in swift winds. Plus each decoy has a cone system built inside them that allows them to move freely on the HEX bases. Therefore, if motion is a top priority for your goose spread, these are a great buy.

Conclusion –

It’s hard to find the best goose decoys these days. However, with DOA these really are one of the best. The only drawback is the price can be a little higher than other models due to the fact that they are fully flocked. However, they have plenty of sales and at times these decoys are $100 off a set, click the link below to check the latest sale.

Shell Goose Decoys –

Avian-X AXP Shell Goose Decoys –

goose decoys

Quantity – 6 Pack
Rating – 9.8
Cost –  $$

Features & Benefits –

Shell goose decoys have a lot of benefits and features compared to full body decoys. First and foremost shell decoys are less expensive, as they use less material and they don’t require a base. Shell decoys are designed to look like sitting geese. Therefore, the metal or fiberglass bases are not required for them to work. As a result, many hunters use shell decoys as filler decoys, or during late season when geese are sitting in fields. They can be a very effective tool for goose hunting.

When it comes to Avian-X’s shell decoys they went above and beyond to make these as practical to use as any other decoy. The heads are made of the same material as the AXP full body decoys. Therefore, the heads are flocked to help prevent any sun glare or reflection. However, one big difference is that the heads are designed to be removed because the shell bodies are all the same size. This allows for the shell decoys to stack, and take up less room. The heads come in different positions to add realism, but the bodies are all the same. As a result, this makes it quite easy for setting these in your spread because it doesn’t matter what head goes with what decoy shell.

Paint & Base –

The paint that is used on the Avian-X shells is the same as the paint schemes used on their full body decoys. The detail and attention to detail in the carving and paint colors brings these decoys to life when they are put in your spread. Additionally, if you already have some full body decoys but want to add some realism to your late season spread these decoys will provide the right color and shape of sitting geese. I’ve found that even though these stack on top of each other, the paint doesn’t scratch or dull.

Conclusion –

Overall, I use these in my spread and it doesn’t take a lot for them to add some dimension to your decoy spread. I will have to say owning goose decoys that can stack up and pack away in a trailer or decoy bag is really nice. Most of the time full body decoys can take up a lot of room, and these are space savers. Since the heads do come off, I would suggest getting a bucket or duffle bag to carry them to and from the field. Other than that these shell goose decoys are a great addition to your spread.

Most would think this would be bad, however, it makes for stacking and packing these decoys a breeze. Each shell fits into the other making these very easy for carrying into a field or storing in a trailer.

Paint & Base –

Even though these decoys are very affordable, they offer fully flocked tails and heads. Helping prevent any glare or reflection of the sun. Therefore, the decoys blend right into a goose spread, and some guys even run just silhouette decoys as they are so confident on the presentation.

Conclusion –

I typically use Silhouette goose decoys to increase the numbers in my spread. However, they do offer some unforeseen movement. When birds are circling silhouette decoys tend to look like they are moving around as they appear and disappear for geese. As a result, I would lean on setting plenty of these in your spread to offer movement if you don’t have any.

Also, if you think of looking at Dive Bomb Decoys from the perspective of goose, the decoys will appear and disappear as they circle into a spread creating a motion illusion.

Once you unbox the V2 Canada Goose silhouettes from Dive Bomb Decoys, you’ll notice how realistic they appear. The image of the goose is printed on both sides in a non-glare textured ink, giving it an ultrarealistic appearance. Especially as sunlight shines on them they won’t reflect light and cause geese to flare off from the glare. Every dozen pack of Canada Goose silhouettes has images of feeders, resters, lookers and away positions.

Paint & Base –

Every silhouette has a 20-inch long stake that has two prongs, allowing it to penetrate into any surface all season long. We’ve used ours in freezing conditions and had no issues putting them into the frozen ground without bending. Mostly this is due to the stakes being made of tempered steel that is powder coated black, eliminating chances of them rusting and breaking down. The stakes are made of the ideal diameter steel required to insert them into any surface and yet not too thick where they end up being heavy.

Conclusion –

If you ever needed to fill in your goose spread mid to late season. A set of silhouettes are easily the least expensive and most convenient decoy to put in your decoy spread. Not only are they affordable compared to full body decoys, but they are way easier to pack into a truck, trailer or decoy bag.
